Layer up — mountain weather changes fast. Waterproof hiking boots are essential. Bring bug spray for summer trail hikes, and always carry a paper map in backcountry areas where cell service is spotty.
WV has excellent dispersed camping in National Forest lands. Always follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out waste, camp 200 ft from water, and use established fire rings where permitted.
Dozens of licensed outfitters operate on the New and Gauley rivers. Look for ACA-certified guides. Trips include all gear. Book ahead for Gauley Season (Sept–Oct) — it sells out quickly.
Always let someone know your backcountry plans. WV has areas with no cell service. Download offline trail maps via AllTrails. Flash flooding can occur — check weather before entering gorges.
A car is essential for most WV adventures. Roads can be steep and winding — use a GPS but also carry a printed atlas. Many state parks are accessible off major interstates (I-64, I-79, I-77).
